Chakalaka Calzone Dough
This recipe does not require you to make pizza dough from scratch. If you are a dough aficionado, you certainly can make your own dough. If you do this, you’ll need enough to make one large pizza. If not, no worries!
Simply head over to the fresh section of your supermarket. Oftentimes, you will see batches of homemade pizza dough right next to the prepared pizza counter. Pick up one of those for this recipe and it’ll be the easiest meal you make all week!
If your grocery store does not carry homemade pizza dough, that’s okay. Try getting some dough from your favorite take-out pizza restaurant. They are likely more than happy to sell you some unbaked dough for your Chakalaka Calzones. This is another great way to support their business in addition to ordering hot and fresh pizza.
Sealing the Calzones
When folding over your calzones, it’s very important to seal the edges very well. If you don’t, the filling could leak out and create a misshapen calzone. There are many techniques for this, but we recommend the fold and crimp method.
Place the filling directly into the middle of the rolled dough. Fold over one side to the other and press any air out of the middle. Press lightly to seal the edges with one another. As a final step, use the edges of a fork to crimp-seal the calzone so that it looks like a half-moon shape.
Alternatively, you can also fold the edges of the dough using a tucking method. Fold and tuck along the entire curved edge of the calzone. This method is best for people comfortable working with dough. It will also create a thicker edge, which may require more baking time.

Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Recipe yield: 4 calzones
Servings: 4 servings
Ingredients:
1 package spicy Chakalaka, prepared
1 prepared pizza dough
8-10 slices of pepperoni (optional)
1 cup mozzarella cheese
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon flaky sea salt
1 cup prepared marinara sauce, for dipping
Instructions:
Begin by preheating your oven to 450 degrees F.
Prepare the Chakalaka as per the package directions. Allow it to cool slightly.
Divide the pizza dough into 4 equal portions. Roll one out, keeping the others under a damp towel to keep them from drying out.
Roll it out to about ⅛-inch thick using a rolling pin. Place ¼ of the Chakalaka into the center of the dough sheet. Layer a few slices of optional pepperoni on top. Then, top with about ¼ cup of cheese.
Fold the calzone over itself and seal the edges with a fork. Repeat with the rest of the dough and fillings.
Place the calzones on a baking sheet. Brush with olive oil and top each with flaky salt. Pierce a hole in the top of each calzone carefully to allow steam to escape. You can also prick with a fork.
Bake 12-15 minutes in a preheated oven until the crust is golden and the filling is hot.
Remove from the oven and serve immediately with the marinara sauce for dipping.
